      - Арль? Это, кажется, еще древнеримское поселение?
      - Да, да. На Роне, часах в двух езды от Марселя. Я был там однажды. Колорит в этих местах такой, что африканские пейзажи Делакруа перед ним бледнеют.
      - В самом деле? И там жаркое солнце?
      - Солнце? Такое жаркое, что можно сойти с ума. А поглядел бы ты на арлезианок - это самые прекрасные женщины в мире. Они еще сохраняют чистые, тонкие черты своих греческих предков, а вместе с тем в них есть что-то крепкое, кряжистое, унаследованное от римских завоевателей. Но самое любопытное - в них чувствуется Восток: я думаю, это результат сарацинских набегов восьмого века. Ты знаешь, Винсент, однажды там нашли в земле настоящую Венеру. И, вообрази, она была чисто ар-лезианского типа!
      - В таком случае арлезианки должны быть обворожительны.
      - Можешь не сомневаться. А вот подожди, как подует мистраль!..
      - Что это такое - мистраль?- спросил Винсент.
      - Поживешь, увидишь,- ответил Лотрек, криво усмехнувшись.
